One of the inescapable facts about the photography industry in the UK is that it is unregulated. The end result of this is that anyone, yes ANYONE, can buy a camera, read the manual and then declare themselves to be a professional photographer.

A few hundred pounds buys a flashy looking website, a couple of hours writing populates it with content and a few paid for training days gets you the images to put in it.

There is of course more, much more, to being a qualified professional photographer and one of the things you may look at to help improve your skills, is to join a professional trade organisation.

With so many around where do you start?

The first thing you need to do is understand that not all organisations are the same. Sadly there are, like any other industry, good and bad out there and this article hopefully will at least allow you to make an informed decision on who to join.

The first type of organisation is those that only allow full time members in. These are generally geared towards those who make a full time living out of photography. Admission is generally by submission of work which is judged. Upon successful completion you are then admitted and accredited as a member. In some cases the organisation is owned by the members.

The next type of organisation is generally for aspiring photographers looking to improve their skills. There are many of these within the UK, often only requiring a subscription to join. When considering joining these types of organisations always do some thorough background checks first, for example on search engines. Many “Organisations” are private businesses and like any business, have to earn a living. Your subscription to their service helps generate their profit margins and sometimes, they may let their own business profits take precedence over member’s welfare resulting in you paying a fee for a service you simply do not receive.

Their websites may make promises of training, qualifications and mentoring but these promises may not fully materialise. Always do your homework prior to joining. Many of these types of organisations though are highly reputable and members do receive the advertised benefits.

The last type of organisation is the bread and butter of the photographic industry, the camera clubs. Over the years these have proved to be invaluable to the development of not only individual photographers but to the photography industry itself. Often owned by the members and run by a committee, camera clubs have been the life blood of the industry allowing both amateurs, part time and full time professional photographers to improve their photographic skills.

So, to summarise. If you are contemplating joining ANY photographic trade organisation, do your homework first. Be brutally honest with yourself in the first instance and write down your photographic strengths and weaknesses. This list will help you identify what, if any, training you need and armed with this information will allow you to make an informed choice on which organisation to join.

Photography is a hobby that takes you closer to your creative side. It is not as simple as aiming and shooting. There are several things to consider to ensure that you get a quality photograph. The photography tips mentioned below are sure to make your hobby a more fulfilling one.

The first important thing is to carefully go through the literature accompanying your camera. This is something that most people overlook, however it will help you understand your camera and its different features better so that you may use it to its best capacity. While earlier cameras had some basic features only, the newer more advanced ones require in depth knowledge before you can take good pictures.

A true photography enthusiast will take care of all aspects to ensure that the picture turns out to their satisfaction. Relying to a large extent on digital enhancements only takes the pleasure out of photography. A photography tip that will enhance your enjoyment is to suitably hone your skills before you go about clicking pictures.

A very important tip is to ensure proper exposure. Underexposed photographs do not have the desirable colour quality. Similarly, overexposure makes the picture too bright, which gives an artificial tone to it. This leads to details, highlights and the natural look getting lost. However, experts would give you the tip that in photography underexposure is preferred to over exposure because in the former the details are intact and can be corrected. Heed the photography tip of learning to understand the exposure warning lights.

Focus is another important aspect of photography. Always keep in mind the photography tip of focusing on the subject and not objects around it. Also remember that a close up will have lesser depth of field than a subject that is far away. An essential photography tip is not to be unduly worried about being out of focus, or about the sharpness and clarity of the picture.

A good photographer would always prepare beforehand. Think and visualize the subject, the exposure and all other relevant issues before you finally shoot.

Any photography tip would emphasize on concentrating more on the human endeavour than the mechanical part. So, if you have the creativity, give it a free hand. Also learning the fundamentals from a professional photographer is not a bad idea if you find it difficult to enhance your photography skills on your own.

Finally, a photography tip that holds good in many different fields too. Practice makes perfect. Go out and click photographs to your hearts content, keeping in mind the basic photography tips. With every picture that you shoot you are sure to develop a better understanding of focus, light, composition and so on.

Photography is a hobby that provides great satisfaction and at the same time helps connect with nature as you take in the colours, light and shadow effects and the wonders of creation. These photography tips can help an amateur take their passion of photography to new heights.

There are many companies throughout the UK offering Aerial Photography from aircraft but also several offering mast photography. These offer very different products and the end use, location and size of site will dictate which is the most appropriate.

Mast Photography is where a camera is elevated from a fixed point on the ground using an extended pole or mast. This is often hydraulically operated although some manual systems still exist. Conventional Aerial Photography utilizes an aircraft such as a Cessna or a Robinson Helicopter. Both mast and conventional aerial photographic companies will often have their own extensive Aerial Photographic Library.

Although it would appear that mast photography would be lower cost it must be remembered that the photographer (with mast) must travel to the site and once at a site it takes time to set up the mast in each position. Due to these timely processes the price is often similar.

Event Photography is often undertaken using a combination of both mast photography and aerial photography due to the differences in the results. It also allows greater coverage and a much greater variety of angles.

Although some forms of Construction Photography benefit from mast photography large construction projects will often require conventional aerials as greater height will be needed. This is especially true if local transport links need to be included which may be several miles from the site. Progress Photography of building projects will often have a similar brief but ultimately the type of photography used will be dictated by the size of the site and the desired content.

What Is So Good About Digital SLR Cameras

Digital SLR cameras are today the fastest expanding section of digital camera sales and are no longer just for professional photographers, but are fast becoming more affordable for amateurs. If you are serious about your photography and, because digital cameras are so affordable, there is no doubt that a digital SLR camera should be on your shopping when you are looking for a new camera.
SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex and the digital range is comparable in functionality to their 35 mm SLR equivalent and is just a computerized version of the same device, using light sensor chips and memory cards instead of film. Also known as TTL (through-the-lens) cameras they allow the photographer to see exactly what the final picture will look like because of the design that light entering the lens makes it’s way to the viewfinder via reflection by a mirror. Focus and zoom is by the use of interchangeable lenses all with various vocal lengths
Some of the disadvantages of a digital SLR camera are minimal. However, compared to point and shoot models they are usually larger and heavier meaning that they are not always readily available for that opportunist photograph. To the inexperienced user they can also appear complicated and intimidating. Susceptibility to dust contamination can also be a problem as particles can enter the camera when changing lenses although many leading companies are now introducing sophisticated dust reduction systems to counteract this problem.
Today’s digital SLR cameras are less expensive and more refined than ever and offer more expert management of your photographs. Some of the features within these cameras can include in-camera editing, image stabilization, auto focus, high-speed continuous shooting. However, because they are becoming more attractive to the amateur does not mean that more advanced photographers are losing out.
The number of digital SLR cameras that are on the market now can be overwhelming to the newcomer, but some of the popular cameras geared to be more affordable and worth considering are the Nikon D70s, Nikon D50, Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, Canon EOS Rebel Xti, Olympus Evolt E-300, Canon EOS 10D, Nikon D40, Pentax K100D, and the Sony Alpha A100. Obviously this list is by no means complete, but is a starting point.
Whether you are upgrading from compact digital cameras or 35mm SLR camera it is easy to see that digital SLR cameras are superior to the more unsophisticated cameras. Digital SLR cameras fall mainly into four categories, between consumer and ultra professional, and it is important to determine how much you are willing to pay as at each level the price increases significantly.
Better quality images without the strain and greater flexibility are just a couple of the attractions of digital SLR photography and once you have a tried it you’ll find it difficult to return to point and shoot photography.

Should You Consider A Professional Digital Camera?

Regarded as the definitive word in artistic control for the skilful photographer professional digital cameras provide professional quality capability and most specialized photographers are now converting to capturing their pictures with the advantage of these cameras.

Now considered far superior than any film camera available many commercial as well as some amateur photographers are transferring to professional digital cameras. However, because they can be prohibitively expensive they are more for the serious photographer and not intended for people who simply want a camera to capture some vacation snaps.

These cameras have all the characteristics that a professional photographer could ever need, are adaptable, less likely to have problems during the day as they are more robust and, offer a comprehensive range of manual controls. They provide high resolution and the best available optics and are everything that professional photographers need to allow them to concentrate on creating great images.

Mainly SLR (Single Lens Reflex), the present day breed of professional digital cameras is noticeably distinct to what was being employed a year ago. Many sophisticated elements that were found only on top of the range cameras are now offered at more economical prices, but with continuing development are worlds above consumer cameras in price as well as quality and will continue to be so.

As with all digital cameras they have advantages over their film equivalents and perhaps the main benefit is the ability to edit and correct images instantly. They provide better quality for printing and online use. And of course digital files are much easier to store than film negatives and there is no film to buy.

There are disadvantages, however, to digital photography. The inability to capture pictures in black and white used to be one of the biggest drawbacks. The latest advances are beginning to overcome this, however. They are more expensive than 35mm cameras and when you add on the cost of accessories such as extra lenses it can become prohibitive. With the technology continuously shifting most digital cameras require upgrading after a few years or when the next ground breaking camera comes out.

All in all a professional digital camera can undoubtedly provide professional results and are considered the ultimate in creative control for the serious photographer and are designed to meet all the demands required by the professional.

If your thoughts on photography are to point and shoot and then pick out the best of a bad bunch of pictures you have taken then a professional digital camera is probably not for you. However, if you are serious about your photography and are always striving for the ultimate picture, then you will, in all probability, want to invest in one of these cameras to take you to the next level.

How To Improve Your Photography With A Digital SLR Camera

SLR (Single Lens Reflex) digital cameras have always been associated with professional or, at the very least, the more serious amateur photographers because of their expense. However, because every day new models of SLR digital cameras are being launched, they are becoming more affordable, and more people who want that extra control over their photography than they can get from a compact are upgrading to them.

Even novice photographers can take remarkable pictures with these new cameras, which after a time are particularly user friendly. SLR cameras, the cheap entry level models included, surpass even the most expensive standard digital cameras and, as the digital world is moving extraordinarily fast, more and more models come onto the market and prices are falling.

There are some disadvantages, however to owning a digital SLR camera. Even though they are becoming more affordable they still incur higher costs than basic compacts. They are bigger, weigh more, the extra expense of purchasing lenses, and there is a learning process to enable you to become familiar with the camera. But if you want your photographs to have a more professional quality then it is worth it.

The options and features appear unlimited in the world of SLR digital cameras and personal choices will depend on what you need out of a camera. Below are listed some of the more popular models, which will hopefully give you an idea of what would match your taste. This is not in the slightest an all-inclusive record, just a casual mixture. There are countless others introduced regularly.

Nikon D40
Affordable digital SLR that is easy to use and compact with a 2.5 inch LCD screen, 6.1 mega pixel and a built-in flash and hot shoe.
A user-friendly camera packed with features that make this camera a fine introduction for the newcomer to DSLR. With all the innovative options and flexibility, which has come to be expected with SLR photography, the D40 will encourage more people into the world of digital SLR than any earlier digital SLR.

Olympus Evolt E410
A compact and well built SLR with a 2.5-inch Live View HyperCrystal LCD display, 10 mega pixel and dust-free technology.
One of the most compact DSLR cameras with 30 automatic shooting modes designed to provide the uppermost adjustments for a variety of shooting circumstances, but also with a full range of manual controls to enable you take command of your photography.

Pentax K10D
Extremely well built and affordable SLR with10.2 Mega pixels, a 2.5″ Active Matrix TFT Color LCD display screen and an SLR Optical Pentaprism Viewfinder.
The Pentax K10D is one of the more appealing SLR cameras presently available on the market. The well-designed body and very responsive features are combined with dust-proof seals and water-resistant body.

Canon Digital Rebel XT
One of the smallest and lightest digital cameras in its class with a 1.8 inch TFT color LCD monitor, 8 mega pixel and DIGIC II Image Processor, enabling fast, accurate image processing.
Despite the small LCD screen the Rebel XT is famed for its superb range of features and great value for money. With a sturdy build quality and a smaller, lighter but easy-to-handle design and rich colours and silky smooth resolution, which is to be expected from a Canon product.

Sony Alpha A200K
Powerful, versatile and simple to use with 10 mega pixel, 2.7-inch ClearPhoto LCD and 4x optical zoom.
With high-speed processing, high sensitivity, advanced noise reduction, lightweight and exceptionally easy to operate, the Sony Alpha gives you all you need to develop your photographic creativity. Excellent for those stepping up from point & shoot cameras.

There are many makes and models available for the SLR digital camera shopper and these are just a selection. no matter what you want out of a camera there will be one to fit you.

Nikon’s No Compromise Attitude To Digital Camera Quality

Countless awards for excellence in photography have been won with the products produced by Nikon, which is somewhat predictable since uncompromising professionals have employed Nikon cameras for many years. Nikon continually strive to improve their products and as such remain one of the best manufacturers of digital cameras.

Although Nikon was formed in 1917, the brand name didn’t emerge until 1946 when the company decided to concentrate on the manufacturing of cameras and the first Nikon camera, Nikon I, was developed in 1945 and released in 1948. Steady sales were ensured through developments in film advancing, picture size, and other areas. The Nikon S was released at the end of 1950, Nikon’s popularity spread even further and production steadily increased. Nikon adopted a no compromise approach to the development of their cameras and this became known as the Nikon culture, and as sales confirm, there will always be users who prefer such products.

Nikon have been prominent in photography for decades and although their digital cameras aren’t the lowest priced on the market they come with a seal of excellence. They deliver unsurpassed imaging results with faultless simplicity and technology that explains why they continue to grow in popularity.

Nikon digital cameras furnish the requirements of both professional and recreational photographers and there is a camera that will fit almost any need irrespective of your level of experience, as you will see by the following examples.

In Nikon’s Fun and Leisure range is the Coolpix 5600, which is one of the smaller digital cameras on the market with 5 mega pixels, 1.8-inch LCD display and 3x optical zoom. Easy to use and fully automatic, this digital-camera is a standard point and shoot and is for anyone who is looking for worry free picture taking. However, it is packed with features for those that want to be a little more creative with their photographs.

In the Enthusiasts and Hobbies range is the Nikon Coolpix L4, a compact and light weight camera with 4 mega pixels, 3x optical zoom and a 2.0-inch Super Bright LCD display. Stylishly designed, exceedingly well built and probably one of the most basic and straightforward digital cameras that Nikon manufacture. An ideal camera for anyone who is looking to stay within a budget, but are unwilling to sacrifice on quality.

Also within the same range is the Nikon Coolpix 8400, an extraordinary compact digital with 8 mega pixels, 3.5x ultra-wide angle optical zoom and 1.8 inch LCD monitor. The Nikon Coolpix 8400 has the feeling and appearance of a serious camera and, for those who sometimes want the simplicity of a point & shoot, but also want the features available to help improve their photography, this camera is ideal. This is a camera with impressive photo quality and is superbly built.

When you move on to the SLR range of cameras you come into the top of the range of Nikon’s products and a good example is the Nikon D80, which is a 10.2 mega pixel camera with a 2.5-inch LCD display. Designed with absolute picture-taking control in mind, previous Nikon owners will not be disappointed with this camera as the intention of producing a camera with fitting features for the serious enthusiast and novice DSLR user alike has been met, combined with fantastic image quality.

Nikon have built their name by manufacturing quality products that have provided professional photographers with reliable equipment for many years and now photographers of every level are experiencing that quality.

How to Improve Your Photography With Good Photograph Composition

Many people believe that the only qualification needed for taking a good photograph is being able to use the manual controls of their digital camera. However, although this is important, composition is just as essential if not more so. In fact using the auto settings and getting the composition right will result in better quality images. Photograph composition conveys your influence on your photographs and without doubt the most crucial part of creating a good picture is the correct arrangement of the subject and background and yet, the majority of novices and amateurs ignore it.

The basis of good composition is accepting what does and doesn’t belong in a photograph. To some this seems to come naturally while others have to work at it and although the editing process can achieve good composition later it’s more beneficial to be successful when capturing the image in the first place. It’s a lot easier to edit a well-composed photograph.

There are a few guidelines, however, to follow that will help improve the quality of the composition and therefore the quality of the images. Simplicity is probably the first and foremost important rule. Selecting backgrounds that are uncluttered will not transfer attention away from the chosen subject and the most visual treatment should be given to the center of attention in the pictures.

Another good suggestion for better photograph composition is the Rule of Thirds. Basically, this entails dividing the image into thirds, vertically and horizontally and, depending on the subject, place the center of interest on one of the four options where these lines intersect. Compositions using this technique usually turn out more appealing and many digital cameras now include this feature.

For outdoor pictures the time of day can be significant with the colour of the light surrounding the subject further enhancing or detracting from the photograph’s composition with the shadows and light direction becoming part of the construction of the image. Enhance the composition with energy and depth by the use of diagonal lines and patterns. A strong foreground will lead the eye onto the main subject and give the composition perspective and interest.

There are many things that go into making a good photograph and composition, although important, is just one of the elements. However, get the composition right and you will enjoy the results of your photography much more. Keep practising and it will become a habit to give consideration to the composition of any image when taking a photograph.
